| Saturday, 16 November, 2002, 17:43 GMT Thompson out for Scots ![]() Steven Thompsonhas been a Scotland regular Steven Thompson is out of Scotland's midweek international friendly against Portugal in Braga. The Dundee United striker missed Saturday's 2-1 defeat of Motherwell. And he told BBC Scotland: "I got a kick on my ankle against Livingston on Wednesday. "It has swollen up, leaving me no chance of playing today, or of playing against Portugal."
"He understands the situation," said Thompson. "Dundee United want me to stay here for intensive physio so I can play next Saturday. "Things have been going well for me with United and Scotland. "But I am suspended for the next European Championship against Iceland, so Berti Vogts was going to have to change things anyway." One possible replacement, Hibernian's Garry O'Connor, is already sidelined for up to six weeks. Vogts does not intend calling up any replacement for Thompson. So the way appears to be clear for West Bromwich Albion's Scott Dobie, who has recently been on the bench, to start alongside Stevie Crawford. Newcastle United's Stephen Caldwell, who recently returned to action following injury, has already been called up to replace Robbie Stockdale. The Middlesbrough defender pulled out with the niggling foot injury that prevented him playing for his club against Chelsea on Saturday. | See also: 14 Nov 02 | Scotland 08 Nov 02 | Scotland Top Scotland stories now: Links to more Scotland stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
