Danny Gabbidon has won his first Wales call for 18 months after being named in the Wales 22-man squad for next Wednesday's friendly in Montenegro.

The West Ham defender, 29, has suffered a complicated abdominal problem, but is continuing his rehabilitation from his injury nightmare.

"That's pleasing for us, but it must be very pleasing for the player," said Wales manager John Toshack.

"There was doubts about his future some six months ago."

Simon Davies (foot) and Gareth Bale (knee) are injured but Jason Koumas is left out.

Reading striker Simon Church is also called up, while Craig Bellamy returns.

Lewin Nyatanga is in the middle of a club v country tussle after being called up despite Bristol City asking Wales to leave the 20-year-old centre-back out of their international in Podgorica.

The Montenegro friendly will take place four days after the beginning of the new Championship season and just 24 hours after City travel to Brentford in the Carling Cup first round.

"I was very surprised to learn of the games that week," revealed Robins boss Gary Johnson.

The Welsh FA rejected Johnson's request as under Fifa rules clubs must release their players called-up for international friendlies 48 hours before the scheduled game.

But Toshack was sympathetic to Johnson and other managers' feelings towards the game.

"It's a ridiculous date," he said. "I've had a few managers on this week.

"It's not so much the gripe is with me or with us, it's the timing of it and I perfectly agree with them.

"But what can we do? We can't just say we are not going to play.

"We only have 10 games a year and we have to take advantage of it."

Nyatanga has been named alongside West Ham centre-back pair Gabbidon and James Collins - the double-act Toshack hails as his defensive "nerve centre" - in the Wales manager's 22-man squad.

Gabbidon, who won the last of his 40 caps in November 2007 in a 0-0 draw in Germany, has starred in West Ham's pre-season campaign and scored in their Asie Cup third-placed play-off win over Beijing Guoan last month.

Both Fulham midfielder Davies and Tottenham Hotspur full-back Bale are recovering from surgery on foot and knee injuries respectively.

But Davies and Bale, two of Wales' experienced Premier League stars, are expected to be fit for their next World Cup qualifier with Russia at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 9 September.

"The next I'll meet up for Wales is for the Russia game as I should be fit for that," Davies insists.

Wales captain Bellamy and Reading youngster Church, who played in both Wales' end-of-season internationals against Estonia and Azerbaijan, are to be in Wales' friendly squad but Wigan playmaker Koumas will once again be left out.
