| Saturday, 18 January, 2003, 16:52 GMT Baggies frustrate Leeds Leeds 0-0 West Brom
West Brom keeper Russell Hoult enhanced his claims for an England call-up by shutting out Leeds at Elland Road. A magnificent save to deny striker Alan Smith was the pick of several vital stops he made to earn the Baggies a valuable point. At the other end, the visitors had a strong claim for a penalty denied when Lucas Radebe appeared to handle the ball.
And Andy Johnson was sent off in the aftermath after receiving a second yellow card for dissent. Robbie Fowler came on as a late substitute but not even he could come up with a winner for the home team. Leeds manager Terry Venables knew West Brom would be a tough team to break down and so it proved from the start.
Mark Viduka combined with fellow Australian Harry Kewell after eight minutes only to be denied by keeper Hoult. Then Smith looped the ball over a West Brom defender before unleashing what seemed to be a goalbound left-foot volley. But Hoult's acrobatics and quick reactions helped him turn the ball away from goal much to the disbelief of the Elland Road faithful.
Going forward, Ronnie Wallwork's cross with his first telling touch almost helped the visitors into the lead only for the outstretched leg of Scott Dobie to put the ball wide at the far post. And Leeds could have been caught out on the counter with 15 minutes to go, but West Brom's penalty appeal was turned down. Fowler then came on to a standing ovation shortly afterwards but even the striker so coveted by Man City failed to have the desired effect for Venables' toothless side. Leeds: Robinson, Kelly, Radebe, Matteo, Lucic, Smith, Bakke (Seth Johnson 70), Okon (Fowler 79), Wilcox (Milner 69), Viduka, Kewell. Booked: Smith.
