Everton's revival gathered pace with Lee Carsley's winner as West Ham United's Upton Park curse continued.

Carsley's powerful second half header gave Everton a deserved victory - and left Glenn Roeder's side still without a win on home territory this season.

The Merseysiders, as expected, left teenage sensation Rooney on the bench, but were forced to bring in Tobias Linderoth to replace knee injury victim Thomas Gravesen.

Goalmouth action was in short supply in blustery conditions - but West Ham goalkeeper David James was a central figure.

He plunged at the feet of Kevin Campbell to save well, but was fortunate to escape serious embarrasment on the stroke of half-time.

James missed Linderoth's through ball, but Li Tie was unable to take advantage from a tight angle.

Everton goalkeeper Richard Wright looked assured when he was tested by shots from Scott Minto and Jermain Defoe.

James was fortunate again in the 56th minute when he misjudged Carsley's free-kick and was grateful to see Campbell glance a header over the bar.

Radzinski battles with Carrick

West Ham gave Everton their biggest scare seconds later when Ian Pearce headed Paolo di Canio's corner into the side-netting.

The Italian then wasted a great chance by shooting straight at Wright from eight yards.

Everton responded after 63 minutes by sending on Rooney to replace Tomasz Radzinski.

And he had a great chance almost immediately when he raced on to Campbell's pass but shot over.

Everton got the goal they deserved after 69 minutes when David Unsworth's cross found Carsley at the far post to power a header past James.

Joe Cole had been quiet, but he burst into action to force a fine save out of Wright as West Ham finally applied pressure, but Everton survived.
