| Saturday, 10 August, 2002, 16:19 GMT 17:19 UK Rotherham stun Millwall Millwall 0-6 Rotherham United Darren Byfield struck four times as Rotherham got Millwall's season off to the worst possible start. The Londoners made the play-off semi-finals in May while Rotherham narrowly avoided relegation, but the formbook was completely overturned.
The 25-year-old opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with a powerful header from Paul Warne's cross. And after David Livermore blasted over the top for the Lions, an error from 'keeper Tony Warner let the visitors in for a second. Warner allowed a 35-yard Martin McIntosh free-kick through his grasp and over the line two minutes before half time. But no-one could have predicted Millwall's dramatic collapse in the second half. Byfield increased the lead nine minutes in when defender Darren Ward hesitated, allowing him to poke the ball past Warner. Millwall reacted by surging forward but their failure to convert a host of chances caused more frustration in the stands. Chris Sedgwick made Mark McGhee's side pay in the 71st minute when he cut in from the right to fire home number four. Byfield completed his hat-trick 10 minutes from time with a chip from the edge of the area, and added his fourth within 60 seconds when he rounded the goalkeeper. |
