Canoville's goal against Hyde was his first of the season
Caretaker boss Jason Lee was frustrated as Boston United failed to press home their advantage in their 2-2 draw with 10-man Hyde in Blue Square Bet North.
Hyde had Callum Byrne sent off after 27 minutes with Anthony Church netting the resulting penalty to make it 2-1.
But Boston were punished for not adding to their tally when Andrew Smart levelled from the spot on 77 minutes.
Lee told BBC Lincolnshire: "We were against 10 men at home but never looked like we would get lots of goals."
The Pilgrims had gone ahead through Lee Canoville's sixth-minute header from Jamie Yates' free-kick, but were pegged back 12 minutes later by Kevin Holsgrove's deflected equaliser.
Byrne then saw red for a professional foul after bringing down Yates.
Boston remain third in the table but missed the opportunity to close on the top two, with leaders Alfreton losing and second-placed Telford also drawing.
Lee added: "I felt the first half was OK but in the second-half we didn't really get after them.
"The boys are disappointed but that's a good sign. We don't look on it as a positive result but we're still in there and there are 15 or 16 other teams who would love to swap places with us."
