Poole boss Tom Killick praises striker Steve Smith

Football

Poole Town boss Tom Killick has praised substitute Steve Smith for his two goals in Saturday's 3-2 win over Spennymoor in the FA Vase fifth round.

Smith scored with his first touch, adding a second minutes later, before Dan Cann sealed a quarter-final spot.

Killick told BBC Radio Solent: "Smith's a massive person for this team.

"He gets the rough end of stick for not being in the starting line-up a lot but he's just got to realise what he's all about - he's a goal scorer."

Smith, who joined Poole from Blandford United in 2007, has made 50 appearances for the Dolphins this season, including 11 as a substitute, and scored 32 goals.

I don't mind who we draw in the next round, but it would be brilliant to play at home and try to improve on the numbers we had today

Killick added: "You can't legislate for the impact Smith had today. His first goal sparked us into life and gave us some belief."

Smith's equaliser for Poole, who had trailed 2-0, came when the ball bounced over the line after hitting his body, and Killick admitted his side were lucky to get back into the game.

"We were clearly very fortunate with the second goal. But that's Smithy all over, he seems to have this unbelievable knack for goalscoring," said the Dolphins boss.

"The players would've thought they were out of it at 2-0 down, so it was such a turnaround and I'm so pleased for them. They really are a good bunch."

Poole, who attracted just 688 for the visit of Spennymoor, face Torpoint Athletic in the next round on Saturday 5 March.

"We weren't pleased with this draw in terms of having to play the favourites, but we have belief now that we've done this," said Killick.

"I don't mind who we draw in the next round, but it would be brilliant to play at home and try to improve on the numbers we had today."
