Nicky Law praises Alfreton Town's character

Alfreton Town manager Nicky Law says the spirit his side showed in Monday's 1-0 win at Stafford is a key reason for their superb form this season.

The Reds are second in the Blue Square Bet North table, two points off Guiseley but with three games in hand.

Law said: "To say we played over an hour with 10 men and won says it all.

"It was a great show of character. The players know that apart from playing good football sometimes you have to dig a result out. This team can do both."

Alfreton were held to a 2-2 home draw by Eastwood on New Year's Day but Law was delighted with the response the team showed in securing a seventh successive away league win at Stafford.

Yes, we are up to our eyeballs in games at the minute but it doesn't bother us.

Freezing weather meant Alfreton barely played in December and Law said: "Obviously we knew we were going to be ring rusty against Eastwood. I thought the application was there, the will to win was there, but the overall quality wasn't.

"They were difficult to break down but as the game wore on we came to terms with it and the introduction of certain players at half-time made it better for us.

"We were happy with the point and then asked the players for an improvement at Stafford which I think we got.

"All of a sudden we had to go a bit further and work a bit harder, which is what we did," he added.

"If we'd had 11, just think what we could have done.

"Sometimes the mental side of the game is the biggest issue and that is what we continually try to get right."

On Saturday, Alfreton host Stalybridge Celtic and on Tuesday, Workington are the visitors to the Impact Arena.

Law added: "Despite our fantastic away form, we fancy ourselves at home against anyone.

"We are not worried about anybody else. I just know if we are all right ourselves, we will be OK.

"Yes, we are up to our eyeballs in games at the minute but it doesn't bother us.

"We have had suspensions and injuries but we have just kept banging away. We now have more of the same, and I don't think any other club in our division has been tested the way we have.

"Good luck to them when they are, we will see how they handle it."
