Boston United ended Blue Square Bet North leaders Alfreton's winning start to the season.
The Reds had won all eight of their opening fixtures, but Danny Sleath's 69th-minute strike brought the run to an end.
The home side squandered a 63rd-minute penalty when Nathan Arnold's tame spot-kick was saved by James McKeown.
McKeown also produced a stunning save in injury-time to deny Alfreton substitute Liam Hearn.
Boston, who have lost just once, move up to second place, two points behind Alfreton.
