Rolls spent less than a year as chairman of Cambridge United

Weymouth chairman George Rolls says his long-term aim is to see the club in the Blue Square Premier and debt-free.

The former Cambridge chairman took over at the Wessex Stadium in November with the Blue Square South basement side close to going out of business.

Rolls told BBC Radio Solent: "Short-term is all about survival in the Conference South this year.

"Long term, it will be to front the club debt-free and be back in the Blue Square Premier and full-time."

The Terras are five points adrift of safety at the foot of the table.

Rolls wants to achieve long-term stability after a turbulent couple of years. The club's estimated debt is around £700,000 and Rolls has taken action to address the outstanding money due to creditors.

He said: "Financially it's obviously working hard to pay off the debts. It's going to take us 18 to 20 months to do so.

"I've spoken to all the major creditors and I think they're commercially understanding of the situation and also recognise that if Weymouth had gone into liquidation they wouldn't have got anything back, so I think they're happy to agree to payment plans."

Rolls says any plan to move to a new stadium is a long way away.

"That's something that is way off yet and there's not even planning permission," he said.

"I'm sure it may well happen but it will be five to six years down the line before we even start thinking about that."

Earlier this week Rolls confirmed the appointment of manager Ian Hutchinson and his assistant Andy Mason on six-month deal.

The Terras owner has been pleased with the pair since his arrival at the club.

"Obviously the same as any business we need to have a bit of continuity and stability and Ian and Andy have done a good job since I've been there," he said.
