Blue Square North side Southport are in talks to sign Aaron Turner from Unibond North side Skelmersdale United.
The 25-year-old midfielder has impressed Southport boss Liam Watson since signing for Skelmersdale from Ashton Town in 2006.
Turner was North West Counties player of the season for the 2005/06 season.
It is understood Watson and the player will discuss personal terms on Tuesday with a view to making his debut against Alfreton Town on Saturday.
Southport are currently three points clear at the top of the Blue Square North ahead of closest rivals Fleetwood Town.
Although the Sandgrounders beat Fleetwood 5-0 on Boxing Day in the league, they were defeated 4-0 at the hands of the same side on New Years Day to reduce their advantage.
