Hurst played in the Football League for Bury, Chesterfield and Notts County
Gainsborough Trinity have released striker Glynn Hurst who joined the club in August.
Hurst, 33, has scored five goals for the Blues but found it difficult commuting from his home in Liverpool.
Trinity boss Brian Little told BBC Lincolnshire: "It was an impossible situation in the end for Glynn.
"We decided it was best if we went our separate ways, but the lesson I've learned is that the location of players is very important."
Little admitted: "There have been a couple of occasions when he hasn't been feeling well.
"With any other player you would say, 'come to training and see how you feel', but after three hours in his car to get here, he's likely to feel worse and it was a situation which unfortunately got worse as weeks have gone by."
French defender Idrissa Alassane has also left the Northolme after he was injured in a late-night incident in Gainsborough town centre.
Trinity are in the bottom three in Blue Square North after Saturday's 1-0 defeat by fellow strugglers Gloucester City.
Mike Symons' 9th minute strike proved decisive, despite the home side being reduced to 10 men when Matt Rose received a second caution early in the second-half.
Little added: "We really should have taken advantage of the positions we got into and we should have got a draw from the amount of possession we had.
"The boys have worked, they've chased and they've harried but they've given the ball away too many times."
