Marc Newsham's goal was his 11th of the season for Boston
Boston United missed the chance to return to the top of the Unibond Premier Division with a 2-1 defeat by Stocksbridge Park Steels.
The Pilgrims made an ideal start with Marc Newsham turning home Jamie Yates' cross in the first minute.
But Stocksbridge hit back with goals from Nicky Darker and Andy Ring, ending Boston's run of five victories.
Joint-manager Paul Hurst told BBC Radio Lincolnshire: "We weren't good enough, we went out with a whimper."
He added: "I looked at my watch after 18 minutes and it felt like 90 because the game had gone end to end.
"We made a great start but when the second goal didn't come we needed to slow the game down and take the sting out of it. The game was far too open and we didn't need it to be like that.
"Stocksbridge worked their socks off and credit to them. I don't want to take anything away from them but we contributed a lot to our downfall, rather than being well beaten by a much better team."
