David Bridgewater's second-half goal earned Redditch United's second home win of the season to lift them out of the Blue Square North relegation zone.
Redditch manager Gary Whild felt his side had been good value for what had been an important victory.
"It was good to win again at home," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "And we justified the three points.
"We've been tipped for relegation ever since we got into the league but we keep finishing around halfway up."
The Reds went into the game knowing they had to get something out of the game if they were not to be in danger being left adrift of a clutch of clubs above them in the league table.
They started well when James Dance put them ahead after 29 minutes when he got across his marker to head home Jamie Sheldon's cross.
Workington levelled through Jonny Wright after 69 minutes.
"It was tremendously hot today," admitted Whild. "We probably switched off once and the guy has gone through and taken his goal well."
But Redditch won it five minutes from time when, with Sheldon again the provider, he pulled the ball back for Bridgewater to fire home a defected shot from the edge of the area.
"We probably got the rub of the green for the second goal," added Whild. "But we showed a lot of character to come back and we worked really hard."
Former Birmingham City and Cheltenham Town defender Jerry Gill impressed Whild on his Redditch debut.
"Without putting too much pressure on him," said Whild, "Jerry has come in and done his own job while his communication and experience has helped out the other lads. Hopefully he will prove a good addition for us."
