Unibond Premier League club Nantwich Town have received more than 30 applicants for the manager's job.
A shortlist has been formulated and interviews with eight men are taking place to find Steve Davis's successor.
Former Port Vale boss Dean Glover and ex-Stoke City player Dave Brammer are among the high-profile names being considered.
Chairman Clive Jackson told BBC Radio Stoke: "We have had some high-quality applicants for the job."
The Dabbers are looking for a manager after Davis left the club in June to become assistant manager at Crewe Alexandra.
Davis's former assistant Peter Hall, who is taking charge of the team during pre-season, is also a leading candidate for the position at the Weaver Stadium.
Jackson said: "He has done really well, he wants the job, and you could say he's in pole position."
