Heggs (right) is convinced he's building a winning Lynn team

King's Lynn have signed 28-year old defender Craig McAughtrie as their new club captain for next season.

He is manager Carl Heggs' seventh signing since he took over as boss two weeks ago.

"I've been chasing Craig since I got the job. He's very big, he's very strong, he knows non-league," Heggs told BBC Radio Norfolk.

"He has won the Conference North twice. He's the sort of player you need in a football club. He's a winner."

He added: "He had a couple of decent Conference North teams that wanted to take him, and I managed to get him. I'm over the moon."

As well as a glut of young prospects, Heggs has signed Blue Square North's second top-scorer Gareth Sheldon and made former Welsh international midfielder Andy Johnson his player/assistant manager.

And Heggs is convinced he already has the core of a promotion-winning team in Unibond North.

"We've got Gareth Sheldon who will be the best scorer in that league, his record of 49 goals in 107 games for Tamworth suggests that.

"I'd probably say that I've got the best centre-half now, so Andy Johnson will be in midfield. The spine of my side is looking where it should be if you've got any ambitions of going up," he said.

Since being appointed King's Lynn manager on 1June, Heggs has also signed teenage keeper Daniel Whatsize, defender Joe Magunda, midfielders Owen Storey, Jordan Webb and Lewis Smith as well as striker Sheldon.

Andy Johnson is the only player to remain at The Walks after playing in Blue Square North last season.
