Worcester 1-2 Weston-super-Mare

Blue Square South

Worcester City had Dave Bampton sent off as they slipped to a ninth home defeat of the season losing 2-1 to Weston-super-Mare.

Ben Wells put Weston ahead on 21 minutes with a freak goal.

Worcester's defence failed to deal with Wells' free kick and watched as the ball struck the cross bar before bouncing down over the line.

City coach Carl Heeley admitted that he and manager Richard Dryden asked questions of the players at half-time.

"It only needed one person to head the ball," he said. "We hadn't got anyone out there today who had the desire to put their name on it, head the ball and deal with the situation."

Things got worse for City in the second half when the referee awarded a late penalty to the visitors, although few people in the ground were sure as to why the spot kick had been awarded.

Heeley felt they had again been their own worst enemies by giving Weston a two-goal lead.

"We've given ourselves mountains to go although when we put the three subs on they have had a go," he said.

"But you are two goals down so it was always going to be difficult," he told BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Bampton received his second yellow card of the match late on after he impeded an attempted quick clearance by the Weston goalkeeper.

City are 16th in the Blue Square South table and will end the season with their worst home record in recent memory.

They have won only four games at St George's Lane this season and, with only one remaining, they cannot now overhaul their previous worst of six wins in a 42-game campaign.

They will head to Twerton Park on Bank Holiday Monday for a match against Bath City (1500 BST).

There will be regular updates on City's progress into a sports special on BBC Hereford and Worcester which is due to get underway at 1400 BST.
