Gloucester eye stadium cash boost

Water swamped the entire pitch during the 2007 summer floods

Gloucester City hope to be in the running for a slice of cash from the local council to help their efforts to find a new home in the city.

The Local Authority Business Growth Incentives Scheme has given the city 188,404 to fund community projects.

In addition, Gloucestershire County Council has been given 538,515 for promoting economic growth in the area.

The club have been homeless since their Meadow Park ground was destroyed in the 2007 floods that hit Gloucestershire.

Local MP Parmjit Dhanda believes part of the funds should be channelled into a new stadium for the club, with a proposed site at Blackbridge under consideration.

"The councils have already set their budgets so this money could be used for additional spending and not be absorbed into any deficits," he said.

"The additional sum of 188,400 for the city and over 500,000 for the county is a welcome boost.

It would be nice to be considered - you don't turn any offers down in this economic climate

Dave Phillips,
Gloucester City chairman
"I hope they will consider working together to build a stadium to bring Gloucester City AFC home to a facility we can all be proud of."

A spokesman for Gloucester City Council said: "The council has not yet had a chance to look at how the money will be spent."

"It would be nice to be considered for this," said Tigers chairman Dave Phillips.

"You don't turn any offers down in this economic climate."

Gloucester are presently playing at Cirencester Town's Corinium Stadium, having spent last season basing their home games at Forest Green Rovers.
