Stamford romp to Lincs Shield win

Non-league football

Phil Stebbing scored a hat-trick as Stamford beat Boston United 4-1 in the Lincolnshire Senior Shield final.

The Daniels went ahead in the eighth minute through former Pilgrim Dan Cotton, with Phil Stebbing doubling their lead six minutes after the break.

Stebbing scored in the 73rd and 79th minutes to complete his hat-trick before Adam Millson netted for Boston.

Stamford manager Dougie Keast said: "Any cup final is worth winning, and we were comfortable winners on the night."

He added: "You have to compete and do your best, and I think we showed better shape, a bit more passion and we were up for it and could have scored even more."

Stebbing's first goal came from a header and the other two were 20-yard strikes.

"He was a handful all night mobile, courageous and such a strong player," Keast said.

Boston United caretaker manager Steve Welsh admitted: "What disappointed me was that there were maybe only two players who could say that they performed anywhere near what they're capable of.

"It doesn't matter if you're playing Stamford or Manchester United, if you're not performing then you're going to get beaten and we just didn't perform tonight, it's as simple as that."
