Worcester consortium to fight on

The consortium trying to take over Blue Square South club Worcester City has vowed to re-submit the forms needed to force an extraordinary general meeting.

Their spokesman Derek Jones conceded they had made some errors when submitting their initial motion.

"There were a couple of technicalities, but they were very minor points," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester.

"I'm meeting with lawyers and we will be pressing ahead with it as we consider this to be delaying tactics."

Derek Jones and his colleagues say this delay is frustrating, but are adamant they will not be sidetracked and this setback has only served to make them redouble their efforts.

While they accept some of the points made by the present board, Mr Jones says they totally refute the most serious allegation.

"The comment that was made, that we had used the name and signature of someone who hadn't given their authority, was incorrect.

"That name did appear on the form, but it had been deleted as we couldn't make contact with that person and somebody else's name had been substituted, so we feel that's a little bit of a red herring," he said.

The consortium members insist they are prepared to roll up their sleeves and battle for the right to hold the EGM, and they are accusing the current board of burying their heads in the sand.

"We just consider this to be delaying tactics because, if they have got nothing to hide or worry about, and if they have got the support of the fans, then let's sit down and have an EGM and put it to a vote," Derek Jones said.

The off-the-field battles come in the same week that the players have returned for pre-season training and the Blue Square South fixtures have been published for the coming season.

Derek Jones

Derek Jones accepts this is an unfortunate backdrop to what is always an exciting time of the year for football fans.

"That's the sad thing about it, but I would reiterate that, if we do succeed, we support that manager and his assistant 100%," he said.

The consortium is stressing that fans will still have the opportunity to question them about their plans for the club were they to take over, as Friday evening's planned forum at the cricket ground still goes ahead.

The meeting is due to start at 7.30pm in the Cricket Suite at New Road.
