Wreh slams Weah

Liberian international Christopher Wreh has launched a scathing attack on team-mate George Weah's involvement in the Lone Star.

Weah was instrumental in helping Liberia come agonisingly close to qualifying for the World Cup, by playing, coaching and financing the side.

But Wreh said this interpretation overstates Weah's role and ignores his major flaws.

Weah controlled everything, but was unable to play the role of leader

"We became a one man show," the former Monaco and Arsenal player said. " Weah controlled everything, but was unable to play the role of leader.

"He always had his favourite group of players that he used in the team even if they were unattached to any clubs. He ignored others, and I was one of his victims."

It is an extraordinary attack from Wreh, who has been close to Weah in the past.

President's choice

Wreh said all the players, not just Weah, helped bank-roll the team.

"Weah made everyone believe that he was the one and only person supporting the team financially, which was untrue. All the players used to pay for their air tickets to play for Liberia. And all had problems with their European clubs in coming back to play, which affected their careers."

Weah's leadership ability is being questioned

The striker, speaking in Egypt while he was hunting for a new club, said things got so bad he decided not to make himself available.

"In the last Nations Cup, I chose to stay away from the team after I felt I was not welcome."

This is the first time such harsh criticism has been directed at Weah, who is used to receiving universal respect from players and fans.

"Now Weah's retired, we need to reunite," Wreh went on. "Debbah and Sebwe should be recalled to the team."

Wreh also claimed that Liberian President Charles Taylor wants him to lead the team.

"What we need now is encouragement and time," he said.
