Kenya and Uganda in Cecafa final

Tanzania's effort was not enough as Kenya edged through to meet Uganda
Uganda will play host to Kenya in Tuesday's final of the East and Central Africa Senior Challenge (Cecafa) Cup after both teams won their semi-finals on Sunday.

Uganda hammered hapless Burundi 5-0 to sail through to the tournament decider, while Kenya edged neighbours Tanzania 2-1.

The hosts went on the warpath early on but the home crowd, who turned out in big numbers, had to wait until the 30th minute for the opener.

Bryan Omony provided the breakthrough when he headed in from a Vincent Kayezi corner.

Andrew Mwaisigwa put them further ahead on the stroke of half-time with another header from a goalmouth melee that saw the ball hit the posts twice before going in.

The floodgates then truly opened after the break, when Stephen Bengo made it three early in the second period and Geoffrey Massa ended a fine solo run for the fourth goal.

Number five came in the 83rd through man-of-the-match Omony, who added his second to truly dismiss the Burundians.

It is Kenya's turn to face the Cranes

Cranes coach Robert Williamson said he was confident for his side going into the final.

"We planned well for Burundi and got them," he said. "It is Kenya's turn to face the Cranes."

The Ugandans will be hoping to end a barren spell of five years without a Cecafa title - quite a wait for a side who have won the event a record nine times.

Earlier, Kenya had to work hard in the second half of their semi-final to ensure victory over Tanzania at the Mandela Stadium.

The Harambee Stars looked comfortable early on as they eased into a 2-0 lead.

Francis Ouma scored the first in the 18th minute, lobbing the ball over the advancing Tanzania goalkeeper Shaban Ndihile.

Mike Baraza made it 2-0 three minutes later after dancing his way through a stagnant Tanzanian defence, who badly missed suspended captain Shadrack Msajigwa and Kevin Yondan.

I have watched them [Uganda] and I believe I can tame them

Kenya coach Francis Kimanzi
However, Tanzania made a game of it, after substitutes Kigi Makasi and Musa Hassan 'Mgosi' changed the complexion of the game.

The Kilimajaro Stars pulled one back in the 79th minute, when Danny Mrwanda got on the end of a Mrisho Ngassa cross.

The Tanzanians then began to press for an equaliser, but suffered a fatal blow when defender Salum Sued was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Despite his team's loss, coach Marcio Maximo was happy with his team's performance "in view of the absence of the two key defenders".

"The boys started shakily but we must credit them with a good second half performance," he said.

His Kenyan opposite number Francis Kimanzi said his team played well but was worried about the injuries they suffered.

"I must do an inventory to see who I have for the final," he said.

Kimanzi also said he was not worried about facing the hosts on their home soil.

"I have watched them and I believe I can tame them," he said.

The final will take place on Tuesday at 1600 GMT, while the third place play-off is scheduled for 1300 GMT.
