Cameroon are through to the next phase of the qualifiers

Cameroon became the second country to clinch a place in the second phase of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers following a 2-1 win over Cape Verde on Saturday.

The Indomitable Lions joined Nigeria in the final round thanks to second half goals from substitutes Achille Emana and Somen Tchoyi on the Atlantic island.

Veteran Claudio 'Lito'Aguiar raised hopes of a shock Group One victory for the Blue Sharks with a 39th-minute goal, but Emana levelled six minutes after the interval.

Tchoyi struck the winner on 65 minutes.

Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o missed the top-of-the-table clash due to a one-match suspension and Cameroon struggled up front until German coach Otto Pfister replaced Modeste Mbami and Achille Webo at half-time.

Cameroon have 13 points and Cape Verde, who have nine, could join them as one of the best eight runners-up from the 12 groups if they overcome Tanzania in Dar es Salaam next month.

Tanzania produced an impressive display to beat Mauritius 4-1 in the group's other game on Saturday despite having no chance of advancing.

A thrilling first-half show in Curepipe saw all the five goals scored within 22 minutes but the win for the visitors was only a consolation.

Midfielder Shadrack Nsajigwa put Tanzania in the lead on 12 minutes but the home side drew level just one minute later through Wesley Marquette.

Nizzar Khalfan restored Tanzania's advantage, and then explosive forward Jerson Tegete scored twice to put his side in the comfort zone.

The win took the Taifa Stars to five points in as many games with one match remaining.

This means they can't overtake second-placed Cape Verde who have nine points.

Mauritius will finish bottom of the table as they have just one point going into their last game against Cameroon next month.
