Sfaxien confident ahead of final

Tunisia's CS Sfaxien captain Abdelkrim Nafti says Al-Merreikh of Sudan are wasting time turning up for the second leg of the African Confederation Cup final.

"There is no way Sfaxien can lose this match even if we fielded our reserve side," boasted Nafti ahead of Saturday's final.

The Tunisian club are preparing to defend a 4-2 first leg lead at Tayeb Mhiri Stadium in the Mediterranean town of Sfax.

"It is impossible to lose by a three-goal margin," the diminutive midfielder told reporters.

"A single goal in Sudan would have satisfied us, but we succeeded in scoring four. I think it is all over.

"The players have made up for their failure in the African Champions League final when Egyptian club Al Ahly defeated us in Tunis with a stoppage time goal.

"There will be no mistakes this time," pledged Nafti.

Success for Sfaxien would complete a Tunisian double in major African club competitions after Etoile du Sahel stunned Al Ahly in the Champions League final two weeks ago.

Given no chance after being held 0-0 at home, youthful Etoile scored twice in stoppage time to complete a 3-1 Cairo triumph and deprive the star-studded Egyptians of a record third consecutive title.

The first leg of the Confederation Cup final was equally sensational.

A Merreikh team that won its 10 previous home matches in the competition over four years trailed by three goals only 18 minutes into the first half.

And a Sudanese side bolstered by Brazilian, Nigerian, Togolese and Zambian imports eventually let in four goals, the same number they conceded in the other 10 games in Omdurman.

"This was an embarrassing defeat," admitted widely travelled German coach Otto Pfister.

I believe it will be extremely difficult for us to bounce back in the return match."

He quit the 'Red Devils' of Omdurman after the match to take charge of Cameroon at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana.

Form suggests Sfaxien will win again and add to the CAF Cup title they won in 1998.

They defeated Jeanne d'Arc of Senegal home and away to win the now defunct competition.

The Tunisian club boast a 100 percent home record in six matches en route to the final.

This includes four-goal triumphs over Satellite of Guinea, Cotonsport Garoua of Cameroon and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa.

Sfaxien scored 19 times with Blaise Kouassi of Ivory Coast and Blaise 'Lelo' Mbele of the Democratic Republic of Congo leading the goal charge.

Goalkeeper Lotfi Saidi has kept six clean sheets.

Merreikh struggled in Africa away from their hot and humid Omdurman fortress this year.

They drew twice and lost the other four matches while scoring just twice and conceding nine goals.

Hearts of Oak of Ghana, Royal Armed Forces of Morocco and Etoile du Sahel won previous editions of the African Confederation Cup, which offers a 330,000 dollar first prize

It is the African equivalent of the European UEFA Cup.
