Jomo Sono is among the favourites to coach South Africa again

The South Africa Football Association (Safa) is expected to name a new national coach next Monday.

However, officials are refusing to divulge the names of the three candidates who have been shortlisted for the job.

Safa held an emergency meeting on Wednesday to discuss a temporary replacement for Englishman Stuart Baxter, who resigned on Tuesday.

The swift action from Safa was also an attempt to deflect growing criticism of the association's administration as recriminations over the Englishman's departure continued to highlight the malaise in the South African game.

Safa's technical committee will be talking to the three candidates in the next few days and have promised an announcement on Monday.

Speculation over the identity of the trio filled the South African press on Thursday morning but insiders suggest Gordon Igesund, Pitso Mosimane and Jomo Sono are being considered.

Other reports have named Ted Dumitru and former national coach Clive Barker.

The committee met for five hours in Johannesburg on Wednesday. "We could not reach a conclusion in one day so we have a list of three candidates.

"They are all active in the league," said Stru Pasiya, the chairman of the technical committee.

"We need to talk to the and their clubs and we'll make the announcement on Monday," he told reporters.

The new coach will take temporary charge for the Nations Cup finals, the third time South Africa will go to the African championship with a caretaker coach.
