Monaco and DR Congo's Shabani Nonda is on the road to recovery |
DR Congo striker Shabani Nonda looks well on the way back to full fitness as he made his fourth successive start for Monaco on Saturday.
Nonda played the full 90 minutes for French club Monaco in their goalless draw with Toulouse .
The DR Congo captain now says he wants to get among the goals to chase a new target by the end of the season.
Nonda's career has been disrupted by injury over the last 16 months first he had a knee injury that kept him out for six months last season and then a thigh muscle pull that saw him missed the start of the current campaign.
The 27-year-old, relieved at the continuation of his comeback, says he is now aiming to reach the milestone of 100 goals in the French league.
He told the French press: "I have a lot of things I want to achieve and the first sight I have set is to get 100 goals in the league."
Nonda has yet to score this season and so far has a total of 88 goals in the French league since he started with Rennes in 1998.
Monaco, coached by former France captain Didier Deschamps, have offered Nonda an extension to his current contract but the extra two season deal is still being discussed by the Bujumbura-born forward and his agent.
"For the moment, I don't feel pressed to prolong.
"I first want to get back to form on the pitch.
"There is a lot of time still for discussion," he said.
Nonda's recuperation will come as good news for DR Congo coach Claude LeRoy, who will want to use the striker when the Simbas host Ghana in their 2006 World Cup qualifier in March.
Nonda captained DR Congo at the 2002 African Nations Cup finals in Mali but has not played an international since the 2-0 win over Botswana in October 2002.
He did, however, travel to Kinshasa for the recent World Cup game against South Africa to support his compatriots (he was unable to play because of injury) and burst into tears when he was given a standing ovation by an 80,000-strong crowd.
