Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed they are keen to entice Nwankwo Kanu back to the club where he first made his name.

The Dutch side are struggling in their domestic league and are seeking looking for reinforcements when the transfer window reopens in January.

Ajax's general director Arie van Eijden has confirmed interest in getting Kanu to the club to strengthen their erratic attack.

Nigerian international Kanu joined English Premiership side West Brom on a free transfer this season after spending several years at Arsenal.

"We have not yet made any formal contact with West Brom," van Eijden told reporters in the Netherlands.

Coach Ronald Koeman was also playing his cards close to his chest: "We are very busy at this stage looking at the players we are interested in buying."

Kanu, 29, was a European Champions League winner with Ajax in 1995, before moving to Inter Milan in Italy.

But his Serie A adventure never took off. Inter's doctors discovered he had serious heart defect which was cured after surgery in the United States.

He then joined Arsenal and spent six seasons at the London club, winning two Premiership medals and the FA Cup in 2002.
