Joseph Yobo grabbed the winner for Nigeria over Algeria |
Nigeria have moved to the top of Group Four in the 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign with a late goal against Algeria in Abuja on Saturday. Defender Joseph Yobo, who plays for Everton in the English Premiership, headed from a corner almost with just five minutes left on the clock to give the Nigerians a 1-0 win.
The win gives them six points to regain leadership of the group.
For the most part it was a dull game but Nigeria did start to attack more as the game wore on and it eventually paid off against an Algerian side depleted by injuries.
Nigeria now have a one-point lead over Zimbabwe, who got their first win of the campaign with a surprising 2-0 win over Rwanda in Kigali.
Rwanda were quick to take the initiative missing three good chances but Zimbabwe fought back with their captain Peter Ndlovu scoring five minutes before half-time.
The win was eventually sealed ten minutes before the end with a goal from Tinashe Nengomasha, to leave Zimbabwe undefeated after their opening three games.
The result will be seen as shock in a Rwanda, with the Wasps having impressed in recent games since returning from the Cup of Nations in Tunisia.
Meanwhile Gabon missed a penalty and conceded a late goal as they drew 2-2 with Angola in Libreville.
Marco Lopez equalised in the 81st minute to salvage a point for the side that beat Nigeria two weeks ago.
Theodore Nze Nguema had given the Gabonese a 2-1 lead early in the second half after the hosts had fought back from a goal down in the first-half.
Thierry Issiemou turned from villain to hero when he made amends for a penalty miss by scoring the equaliser on the stroke of half-time to cancel Fabrice Akwa's 20th minute strike for Angola.
