Christian Chukwu was unable to help Nigeria lift the LG Cup |
Nigeria's team of locally-based players were unable to retain the LG Cup as they lost 1-0 to Senegal in the final in Lagos on Friday.
Brilliant team work from Senegal's mainly under-23 players freed Papa Khalifa Sangere in the 25th minute, who shot past a stunned Rotimi Sunday from the edge of the 18-yard box.
A lack of experience and some poor finishing let the Super Eagles down.
They were unable to break down Senegal even when they were reduced to ten men after Sidy Keita was sent off on the half hour mark for a second bookable offence.
Sangere's goal was enough to see Senegal win the game and with it prize money of US $50,000, with the Nigerians picking up US $30,000.
Coach of Senegal, Mayacine Mar, told BBC Sport that the Nigerian side failed to work as a unit.
"Nigeria is a good side but individual brilliance alone can't win you games," he said.
Nigeria coach Christian Chukwu remained philosophical after the defeat.
"Our aim was to give these players international exposure and win the tournament but not all your dreams can come true all the time," he said.
"I think we've succeeded in making the players realise that just raw talent is not enough to see you through but you also need the determination to succeed, I'm sure they've learnt things today."
Meanwhile, Libya defeated Jordan 1-0 in the third-place match, played earlier in the day thanks to a 37th minute strike from Salem Rewane.
The Libyans picked up US $20,000 for finishing third.
The next edition of the LG Cup will take place in Nigeria in 2005.
