Kenya's Musa Otieno helped his South African club Santos to victory |
Santos of South Africa kicked off their Confederation Cup campaign with a resounding 3-0 win over Mtibwa Sugar of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam on Saturday. The visitors, including the Kenyan captain Musa Otieno, took the lead just after one minute through Fees Moloi, who took advantage of a mix-up in the Mtibwa defence to score.
Santos were reduced to ten men in the first minutes of the second half after Tyrone Arendse was sent off for elbowing a Mtibwa defender.
Despite this they remained in charge and scored a second goal in the 63rd minute through Moloi again, after he was put through by Maranaan Bantam.
David Motoane, who came on as a late second half substitute, wrapped things up for the South Africans three minutes from time.
The score however flattered the visitors with the Tanzanians wasting numerous clear-cut chances.
Despite the big away win Santos coach Abubakar Solomons said he will not be relaxing in the return leg in two weeks time.
"We won't be too relaxed, because you see what happened this week the European Champions League, teams were 4-1 up and they sat back got relaxed and lost that all in the end," Solomons told BBC Sport after the match.
Mtibwa Sugar coach Tom Olaba blamed their defeat on lack of domestic action.
"Santos have been playing in their league but we haven't started ours yet," said the Kenyan-born tactician.
"We didn't even have any friendlies, that's why the boys made such simple mistakes that cost us dearly."
