 President Muluzi wants accountabilty |
President Bakili Muluzi has threatened to withdraw his sponsorship for the under-20 tournament unless the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) accounts for US$2,000 he gave them three years ago.
The money was meant for the hosting of the finals of the under-20 Bakili Muluzi Youth Cup but the event has not been held since 2002.
Allegations of financial mismanagement are nothing new at Fam.
In the last five years, the organisation has lost sponsorship deals from three prominent companies unhappy with the way the game is run.
Presidential aide, Henry Moyo told BBC Sport that the president is "angry" with Fam and his patience is running out.
"The finals have to be held or the president's sponsorship will be withdrawn," he said
Moyo said the president has since given Fam up to the end of this month to host the finals or forget about his sponsorship.
Moyo added that "the presidential is worried that issues of financial mismanagement and lack of accountability are not being addressed properly by Fam."
Fam spokesman McCollins Chibvunde conceded that they are having problems accounting for the president's money.
He told BBC Sport that Fam is in the process of trying to "find money from somewhere" to host the delayed finals.
Chibvunde said: "We've also requested an audience with the State President where, among other things, we're expected to explain and apologise for the misappropriation of his money."
Apart from the under-20 Youth Cup, President Muluzi also bankrolls Malawi's top-flight league to the tune of US$150,000 each year.
