President Muluzi wants to see good football
President Bakili Muluzi has promised to transform Malawian football by injecting substantial funds into the game next year.

A self-confessed football fanatic, President Muluzi has pledged US$100,000 in sponsorship for the country's top division - the Super League.

It follows his decision earlier this year to take over the ownership of the country's most popular team, now known as Bakili Bullets.

President Muluzi, who is due to leave office next May, told the BBC Sport website that his goal is to help develop the game in Malawi.

He said: "I'd like to watch some good football and that can only be achieved through better sponsorship."

The President has, however, indicated that he would not want to see the Super League named him.

The league's current backer, beer company Chibuku, will pull the plug on its US$30,000 sponsorship at the end of the season.

The vice-president of the Malawi FA Shameer Suleman described the presidential offer as "very good for the development of football in the country."
