Zamalek won despite being without the injured Hossam Hassan |
Egyptian giants Zamalek have scraped a 2-1 win over Iraq's Talaba in a second group stage match of the Arab Champions League. The game was played on Friday in Damascus, Syria because of the ongoing security concerns in Iraq.
Talaba were the better side throughout the match and took the lead in the 24th minute through Mohamed Nasser, as Zamalek seemed to struggle without their injured striker Hossam Hassan.
The Egyptian giants weathered the pressure from the Iraqis and eventually Sameh Youssef scored the equalizer in the 72nd minute.
Then with just three minutes left on the clock, substitute Mohamed Abdel Wahed scored the winner for Zamalek with a shot from the edge of the penalty area.
The other two sides in Group A are Al Ahly of Egypt and Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia.
The top two sides from Group A meet the top two from Group B in the semi-finals of the tournament.
In Group B, Africa is represented by Ismaili of Egypt and Tunisia's Sfaxien.
They are joined by two Saudi clubs Al Ahli Jeddah and Al Ittihad.
The final will be in the Lebanese capital Beirut on 26 June, with the winners of the competition picking up US $2 million.
