Tanzania coach Hafid Badru looks set to be replaced |
Officials from the Football Association of Tanzania (Fat) have devised a fund-raising scheme that they hope will earn them enough money to hire a foreign coach.
The Fat secretary general Michael Wambura said a percentage from the sale of match tickets in the domestic league and international games would be used to help fund the national side.
The main priority is to find an overseas coach to replace current trainer Hafid Badru.
"Two hundred Tanzania shillings (about 20 US cents) will be taken from each ticket sold for league and international matches to help support the Taifa Stars," Wambura said.
A match that attracts a crowd of around 40,000 would raise US $8,000 while a game with only 3,000 people would make US $600.
Wambura said that the money raised would also be used to fund the team's participation in international competitions.
Last year the Taifa stars failed to honour their final Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan and withdrew from the Cecafa tournament due to financial constraints.
"Our public image is bad and one way of trying to improve that is to make sure the national team performs well," Wambura confessed to the BBC Sport website.
"We have decided to hire a foreign coach to turn the team around and also help with youth development.
"We will request money from the government and we are seeking sponsorship too, but if nothing comes of that, we hope this scheme will help us out."
Wambura said the decision to hire a foreign manager was passed by the Fat executive committee recently and the recruitment process will begin as soon as they have enough money.
