Henri Stambouli has not extended his contract with Mali |
The Mali Football Federation (MFF) and their French coach Henri Stambouli have failed to agree on an extension to his contract as coach of the national team. Stambouli and Mali reached the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia last month, but a spokesman from the MFF said that the Frenchman had decided against an offer of a new contract with the Eagles.
His original contract was only a short term one that ran from October last year until the end of the Cup of Nations.
As well as getting Mali to the semis of the Cup of Nations he also guided them through the preliminary round of the 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup against Guinea Bissau.
The Frenchman also persuaded the Tottenham Hotspur striker, Frederic Kanoute, and Valencia's Mohamed Lamine Sissoko to switch national allegiances to play for the Eagles after a change in Fifa rules on international eligibility.
Both players having previously represented France at junior level.
There have been reports in the Tunisian media that Stambouli had been in Tunis over the weekend to discuss a job offer from former continental champions Club Africain.
At the same time Algerian press reports claim that he is a candidate to take charge of their country's national team.
He has also been linked with the vacant post with the Egyptian national side.
