Dramane Traore is being tipped to be Mali's new star |
Dramane Traore's goal in Mali's 1-1 draw with Senegal may just mark the emergence of a bright new striking star on the African horizon.
The Malian's header, from fully 15 yards, flew like a bullet into the top corner.
"I am very happy, because Senegal is a big, big team," Traore told BBC Sport.
"But we showed them today that we are a good team too, and I was delighted to score."
That goal was a fine way to introduce himself to the global audience - for football fans in Africa are already aware of what a talent the 22-year-old is.
Last year, Traore put a succession of defences to the sword, finishing as one of the top scorers in the African Champions League for Egyptian side Ismaili.
Traore's pace and finishing ability were major reasons why Ismaili went all the way to the final of Africa's premier club competition.
That success, and this latest goal, have inevitably raised speculation that Traore, who previously played for both Djoliba and Stade Malien in Mali, could be heading for a move to Europe.
"I can tell you that I have had contacts with several Spanish clubs, but I am not allowed to tell you who they are!" the native of Bamaka revealed.
If Traore does get his big move soon, it will be no surprise.
Mali coach Henri Stambouli gushes with praise when asked to assess his young attacker.
"He's a real goalscorer, and a great talent for the future," the Frenchman said.
"That's why I wanted to play him against Senegal, to show everyone what he can do."
Traore certainly did just that, and the man nicknamed 'Rivaldo' by the adoring Malian fans hopes Stambouli will continue to give him a chance in the knockout stages.
