Zambia's FA under threat
By Kennedy Gondwe

FA president Evaristo Kasunga
Kasunga has kept silent on the matter

Zambian sports minister Gladys Nyirongo has threatened to cancel financial support to the country's national teams.

Nyirongo said the measure could be taken as a result of the Football Association of Zambia's (Faz) refusal to make requested changes to their constitution during a recent meeting in Kabwe.

The minister had demanded that the statutes be altered to permit non-Faz members to run for executive positions in the association.

"I have promised that we will revisit the resolutions passed [at their meeting] and issue directions.

"If they refuse to follow them, I will put my foot down," she was quoted as saying by a state-owned daily newspaper.

Nyirongo warned that Faz could not expect to receive government funding for its programmes if they ignored their concerns about the quality of football administration.

"They [Faz] have demonstrated that they have enough teeth to bite, so why should we be going about in circles?

"The best thing would be to ignore them and they should also forget about our money," Nyirongo said.

Although officials of Zambia's league clubs have condemned the minister for interfering in football matters, Faz president Evaristo Kasunga has refused to make any public comments on the current dispute.

Zambia, which failed to qualify for next year's Nations Cup finals, will hold elections for a new Faz executive board during their annual general meeting on 31 January 2004.
