Muluzi has lost faith in the country's FA |
Malawi's FA has been ordered by the country's president to resolve their internal problems or risk losing his offer to sponsor the national championship.
President Bakili Muluzi had declared his intention to spend $150,000 on the Super League but has made it clear that the sum would not be released to the incumbent executive of the Football Association of Malawi (Fam).
"The president says it is risky to give money to the current executive, as he fears that the money may be wasted," said presidential aide Henry Moyo.
Moyo said the country's leader plans to release the funds to the new Fam executive that will assume office next month.
World football governing body Fifa ordered Fam to conduct early elections, following the resignation of John Zingale as president.
Muluzi's tough stance comes barely a week after the government-run National Sports Council announced that it will bar members of the current executive from contesting in the forthcoming elections.
An avid football lover, Muluzi sponsors Bakili Bullets, the country's top football club.
It is expected that the league will be given a new name that reflects the president's sponsorship of the competition.
