Angola's new coach is Luis Oliviera Goncalves |
Luis Oliviera Goncalves has been named as the new coach of Angola, replacing veteran Brazilian Ismael Kurtz who has been sacked. The change comes in the wake of an angry outcry in the country after Angola lost 3-1 away to Chad in the first leg of their 2006 World Cup and Nations Cup qualifier.
The Palancas Negras conceded three goals in the final 15 minutes of that game and must now win by two clear goals in Luanda on 16 November.
Kurtz was philosophical about his dismissal, saying that a change in management might be ideal for the struggling Angolan side.
But he claimed that the absence of the country's all-time top goal scorer, Fabrice Akwa, from the Chad tie played a key role in their defeat.
Akwa, who plays for Qatar SC, opted out of the game in order to stay with his club for the start of the new season.
Goncalves currently coaches Angola's under-23 side, who are involved in the 2004 Olympic Games qualifiers.
He also led the under-20 side to the quarter-finals of the 2001 World Youth Championships in Argentina.
