Raja's Aboucherouane is the top scorer in the Caf Cup |
Morocco's Raja Casablanca host Rangers International of Nigeria in the first leg of what could be a tough Caf Cup semi-final. Although the Moroccans had little problems getting past Etoile Filante of Burkina Faso, FC 105 of Gabon and Black Rhinos of Zimbabwe in previous rounds, the Nigerians travel to Morocco with confidence, after a resounding victory over Egypt's Al Ahly in the quarter-final.
Raja would rely on the marksmanship of Hicham Aboucherouane to secure a solid win which might be decisive in the return leg on Rangers' Enugu homeground.
Aboucherouane, one of the top players in last season's Champions League, is the leading striker in the Caf Cup campaign with six goals.
English Premiership club Southampton declared an interest in signing Aboucherouane but his inability to secure a work permit due to his insufficient caps with the national team scuppered the move.
Mustapha Bidoudane and Moussa Souleymane have each scored three goals in a competition that has never been won by a Moroccan club.
But Little known Nourdine Harouach is a player Rangers will have to watch closely, as he struck in both legs of the quarter-final demolition of Rhinos in September.
Rangers, who have not won an African title since their 1977 triumph in the Cup Winners' Cup, squeezed past Motema Pembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the second round before their convincing win over Al-Ahly.
Okechukwu Odita converted two penalties in a 4-0 home triumph at the Nnamdi Azikiwe stadium in Enugu and the 'Flying Antelopes' proved their resilience in defence with their 0-0 draw in the return leg in Cairo.
In the other semi-final of the weekend, Cotonsport of Cameroon host Tunisia's Club Africain in Garoua.
The Cameroonians scored only four goals in six matches but can name Sundowns of South Africa and last season's title holders JS Kabylie of Algeria among their victims.
Club Africain's home form has been instrumental to their progress in their unpredictable campaign.
They struggled to get past minnows Requins Atlantique of Benin in the first round and only a last-minute goal helped them beat Zambia's Green Buffaloes in Lusaka.
The winners of this year's competition would be last in its history, as the Caf Cup and the Cup Winners' Cup will be replaced by the new Confederation Cup in 2004.
