Confidence is now high in the Enyimba team |
Nigerian side Enyimba claimed their third successive league title on Tuesday with a 4-2 win over Sharks of Port Harcourt. The win is expected to give the Aba-based team a boost ahead of their latest African Champions League match against ASEC Mimosas of Ivory Coast on Sunday.
The league victory came just 10 days after they were humiliated 6-1 by Egypt's Ismailia in their Group A Champions League match.
Having purged their squad and stripped goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama of the captaincy, Enyimba hope to get their continental campaign back on track.
Enyimba's match with Asec will come at the end of a busy weekend for the league phase, which has reached the halfway stage.
Group A's other match is also to be played on Sunday, when Simba of Tanzania host Ismailia in Dar-es-Salaam.
Group B leaders Esperance of Tunisia travel to Angola to play AS Aviacao on Saturday, while Algeria's USM Alger host Canon Yaounde of Cameroon at home on Friday evening.
Enyimba, seeking to become the first Nigerian club to win African football's top club prize, began their group campaign with a 3-0 home win over Simba.
The victory prompted a wave of optimism over their chances of winning the trophy.
But the enthusiasm was dampened by the heavy defeat to Ismailia.
Meanwhile, Asec will fight to stay in the reckoning, as they have only one point from their first two matches.
