Ghana-based refugees will play for Liberia |
A plan by George Weah to airlift Liberia's national team to Ghana for their Nations Cup tie has failed. Weah was prepared to pay $12,000 for a chartered flight to Ghana, as most members of the team are stranded in the Liberian capital Monrovia.
Only three foreign-based players are in Ghana.
Liberia's FA had cancelled an earlier Ghana Airways flight due to their inability to foot the bill.
On hearing the plight of the team, Weah sealed a deal with Whesua airlines, a Liberian concern, to fly the Lone Star to Ghana.
But the airline could not honour the deal, as it does not have landing rights in Ghana.
An alternative plan to resort to Ghana Airways also ended in disappointment.
Although Weah made a payment to the airline, flight when confirmation plans were not received by the Liberian Football Association.
Liberia will use players at the Budumburan refugee camp in Ghana for Saturday's tie.
