Liberian refugees save the day

Liberia's Lone Star will be forced to use players from a local refugee camp for their crucial African Nations Cup qualifying match against Guinea on Saturday.

The national squad were due to fly to Accra in Ghana on Friday but the Liberian FA called Ghana Airways to cancel the flight saying it had no money to pay for them.

The match was moved to Ghana because of the ongoing civil war in the Liberian capital Monrovia.

We will do everything to make this dream a reality

The situation is an extraordinary turn around for a team that only two years ago, with George Weah in their side, was on the verge of qualifying for the World Cup.

Only three national squad members have made it to Accra - Frank Seator, who plays in Tunisia, Greece-based George Gebro and Alvin Kigh (Cyprus).

It now looks unlikely that any other members of Lone Star will be able to get to Ghana so team organisers have been forced to contact the Budumburan refugee camp outside Accra to see if members of their football team can play.

FA Secretary General Yanqueh Borsay told BBC Sport Online in Monrovia that the decision not to send the team was a hard one to make.

"We just have to settle with using the few overseas players that were patriotic enough to show up in Ghana along with Liberian players seeking asylum in that country," he said.

It is a dream ticket for the refugees and particularly timely in that the news comes on United Nations World Refugee Day.

The players themselves are ecstatic about the chance to play for their beleaguered country.

"We are in great spirits and as players,we are ready at all times, especially when it comes to our nation," Budumburam team captain O.P Myers told BBC Sport Online.

"With our mental awareness, we are looking forward to combatting those Guineans.

"It is going to be a great game and I can promiose you personally that we will emerge victorious.

"We have not had the oppurtunity to showcase our talent on the big scene, so we will do everything to make this dream a reality."

Three months ago, the Liberian Sports Ministry announced that it had no money to fund the team because all government resources were being put into fighting the civil war.

Liberia are currently bottom of Group 2 but with all four teams tied on 6 points, only goal difference separates them from leaders Guinea.
