| Saturday, 15 February, 2003, 17:36 GMT Age-cheat team disbanded ![]() African teams, like Nigeria, have a good reputation at U17 level - but Kenya's behaviour will raise questions Kenya's national U17 team has been dissolved by the government after some players admitted to being over-age. Sports Minister Najib Balala made the decision after he interviewed two team members, goalkeeper Francis Ochieng and Aggrey Ongoli, who admitted to being too old. Balala said the Government would lodge a formal apology with Fifa and would request that the country's national teams be withdrawn from all events until further notice.
"We have decided to take such action rather than wait for Fifa or Caf to ban us," he said. "We can not allow such action to pass since we insist on high integrity from all associations". Balala said the two players he spoke to were over 20 years old, and the team's coaching staff had admitted that some players were over-age. Kenya's U17 team were due to be playing Ethiopia next weekend after putting Ghana out in the last round of qualifying for the African Championship. The Ghanaian coach had bitterly complained that Kenya had fielded over-age players. "We will ask Caf to reinstate Ghana into the competition and also apologise to Ethiopia," Balala said. And the Minister said tough action would be taken against the officials responsible. | See also: 27 Dec 02 | Africa 14 Dec 02 | Africa 23 Dec 02 | Africa Internet links: The BBC is not responsible for the content of external internet sites Top Africa stories now: Links to more Africa stories are at the foot of the page. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
