SA announce coaching shake-up
Jomo Sono
Sono has only a few days left as coach

South Africa will announce their new coach next Thursday.

He will be selected from the seven shortlisted candidates named on Wednesday by the South Africa Football Association (Safa).

Safa have gone for a change of structure, following the dispute between former coach Carlos Queiroz and Jomo Sono earlier this year.

The Portuguese coach quit following a conflict with Sono over who had the final say in selecting South Africa's World Cup team.

Safa have said that a local coach, who will have the last say on selection matters, will head the national team but he will be under the control of an experienced foreign 'national technical director'.

Trott Moloto, Ephraim Mashaba, Gordon Igesund, Pitso Mosimane, Khabo Zondo, Styles Phumo and Boebie Williams - the local coaches shortlisted for the vacant position - will be interviewed by Safa on Monday.

The new coach will concentrate on the African Nations Cup qualifying campaign, which begins with a crucial away match against Ivory Coast on 8 September in Abidjan.

Safa said the position of national technical director will be filled by a person "with a proven track record, relevant academic insight and extensive international coaching background."

"An international search would be conducted within the shortest possible time," their statement added.

"He is to be appointed for his academic acumen and knowledge of football education and for his ability to get some uniformity into the structures of the national teams," said Albert Mokoena, Safa's chief operating officer.
