Sono says Moloto is the best person for the job

Jomo Sono will resign as South Africa's national coach on Thursday.

Sono, who will retain control of all South African national sides, says he cannot combine the job with managing Jomo Cosmos, the club he owns, as well as other business commitments.

When he meets with officials of the South African Football Association (Safa) on Thursday, Sono will recommend that Trott Moloto co-manage the team with Ephraim 'Shakes' Mashaba.

"Their appointment would make sense.

"Moloto enjoys the respect of the senior players and Mashaba has been in charge of the best emerging talent for many years," said Sono.

The 46-year-old Sono, who has had two stints as caretaker coach of the national side, said he did not think a foreign coach would be a good option for the country.

Second coming

If Moloto gets Safa's nod, it would be his second time in charge of the side.

He took over from Philippe Troussier in October 1998 and held the post for two years, winning 17 of his 33 games in charge, with just eight losses.

Moloto also guided South Africa to the 1999 Afro-Asian Cup title as well as third place at the 2000 African Nations Cup.

But the public's clamour for an overseas manager saw him being downgraded to an assistant's role while Carlos Queiroz was at the helm.

Sono said as head of Safa's technical committee, he will provide guidance to all coaches and contribute his quota to the progress of South African soccer.
