Onigbinde refuses calls for return

Onigbinde (right) claims he is a free agent
Nigeria's World Cup coach Adegboye Onigbinde says he will not pilot the Super Eagles through the 2004 African Nations Cup qualifying series.

Following Nigeria's elimination at the group stages of the World Cup, Onigbinde was supposed to assume the post of technical director at the Nigeria Football Association (NFA).

Olusegun Obasanjo, Nigeria's President, had insisted that indigenous coaches can manage the national team but Onigbinde said there is no chance that he will take up the job.

"There's no way I can work with people who are not sincere," Onigbinde said.

"What they call a contract is clumsy.

"In one breath they say I have a contract, and in the next they say I am a civil servant.

"I have asked them to clear this up, but up till now they have not responded," he added.

Onigbinde claims he is a free agent, having never signed a contract with the NFA to become the technical director.

But the NFA insist that he is employed by them and are demanding his immediate return.

In the meantime, seven foreigners have declared their interest in managing the Super Eagles.
