Line was preceded by four managers this season

Simon Line says he was shocked to be sacked by Market Drayton Town after avoiding relegation from the Evo-Stik League South.

Line, who had previous successes at Drayton, returned in February to try to keep the club up.

"I'm very surprised. We'd finished a tough season well and I'd already started planning for next season," Line told BBC Radio Shropshire.

Chairman Julian Parton said they wanted to move in a different direction.

It is believed the club wants to use more local players next year.

"I know it's difficult to run a football club at this level, and Market Drayton has come on in leaps and bounds," Line added.

"But I am disappointed - I've spent seven years in all here, and I've sacrificed a lot of time and money at Drayton, to get them from nowhere into the Evo-Stik League, which is an unbelievable achievement."

Line's assistant Delwyn Humphreys has also left the club.
