FA acting chairman Burden upbeat on England 2018 bid

Wembley would host the final if England stage the 2018 World Cup

The Football Association's acting chairman Roger Burden feels last minute lobbying has helped England's 2018 World Cup bid.

Burden, who is also chairman of the Gloucestershire FA, is in Zurich for the vote at Fifa's head-quarters.

Burden told BBC Gloucestershire: "I'm feeling nervous, but reasonably upbeat - we think we're in with a chance.

"We now feel we've had an opportunity to talk to these important people on Fifa, and we've got a great case."

England have competition from Russia to host the tournament, along with joint bids from Holland and Belgium and Spain and Portugal.

Speculation continues over which bid is the favourite, but Burden agrees with a consensus that after recent troubles, England's case has got back on track with Prince William, Prime Minister David Cameron and David Beckham lending their support.

"I've seen a real change in mood in England over the last few days," Burden said.

"We still don't see ourselves as favourites, it's going to be tight but we certainly feel we're back in the game having slipped back a bit over recent weeks - we think that's a good position to be [in]."
