Harris header seals King's Lynn FA Vase win at Dereham

King's Lynn Town are through to second round qualifying in the FA Vase after a 2-1 win at Norfolk rivals Dereham Town.

Robbie Harris headed the winning goal from Luke Thurlbourne's cross in the second minute of extra time.

Dereham took the lead through Kyle Downs in first-half stoppage time, only for Jack Defty to level on 90 minutes.

Other Norfolk teams Gorleston, Fakenham and Thetford Town will face replays after they drew their matches, but 1994 Vase winners Diss were knocked out.

The Tangerines lost 3-0 at Newmarket, but Fakenham Town will get a second chance on home turf after holding Long Melford to a 0-0 draw.

Gorleston drew 1-1 with Ely City at Emerald Park, while Thetford will also have to travel for their replay after being held 2-2 by Rothwell Corinthians.

King's Lynn's joint-manager Gary Setchell told BBC Radio Norfolk that the Linnets' win was particularly pleasing as he and Kevin Boon had only built the side over the summer.

"We've only played 12 or 13 games together and Dereham have been together three or four years," he said.

"Our lads rallied round even though they've only known each other a couple of months, it was a real team effort."

Despite both teams going into the game full of goals, they played out a fairly nervous encounter, not helped by the multiple second-half stoppages which resulted in 14 minutes of injury time.

Setchell said he was pleased that his side managed to find some fluidity by the time it got to extra time.

"We felt we were getting on top, then the injury breaks slowed the game down and we never really got into our stride," he said.

"After Jack made it 1-1 I feel we played the better football, controlled the game and at times put them to the sword."

The majority of the crowd were travelling King's Lynn fans, watching a Linnets team in the Vase for the first time since 1994.

And Setchell says he is pleased that the re-formed club has held on to it's supporters after King's Lynn FC folded in December 2009.

"They got behind us and they left with smiles on their faces, and we're glad," he added.

"We always knew we could put a team together to compete in the league, now people are starting to believe in us and hopefully the good support will continue."
